Col 1:9 Paul's prayer for believers to have wisdom and understanding

Continuing in our study of prayer as part of the PPOG for the spiritual life of the believer we are now looking at Paul and Timothy's prayer for the believer's spiritual growth in Col 1:9-12;

In verse 9 we have "Since the day we heard of you, [we] have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you ” may be filled (pleroo) with the knowledge (epignosis) of His will (thelema) and all spiritual wisdom (sophia) and understanding (sunesis).

Last time we discussed the idea that In the Greek New Testament epignosis (knowledge), sophia (wisdom), and sunesis (understanding) are cognitive or thinking assets for the believer living inside the PPOG which is what Paul is praying for the believers in Colossai to have in order for them to become masters at the use of the Divinely provided PSD’s and be able to overcome in all situations of life on this planet while in the cosmos but not of if.

In this passage, Sophia is a dative feminine singular noun that means wisdom. Sometimes Sophia is a proper noun rather than a common noun, because it is a feminine name.

Wisdom is also personified in the feminine in the Proverbs where it is is often contrasted with folly. Prov 14:33; Net note 92sn

Wisdom infers the application of true knowledge. God, Who is Omniscient and consequently all knowing and wise always makes perfect application of knowledge.

Believers, although not omniscient, can grow in Biblical knowledge and in the making of proper application of biblical knowledge under the mentorship of God the Holy Spirit. In the believer's spiritual life proper application of divinely illuminated knowledge requires divinely imparted power.

As we have seen before, the essence of wisdom is timing.
A right thing must be done in the right way for the right reason at the right time for it to be right.

Believers in TLJC who continue in the Word of Christ learn timing in the application of biblical knowledge to experience over time.

When the Word of Christ is allowed to fill up and to freely circulate in the heart or stream of consciousness of believers, it results in right application of the Word with proper timing and in the power supplied by the Lord via the Spirit. Col 3:16; Eph 5:16;.

True wisdom cannot be dissociated from Christ Jesus. He is both the Wisdom and the Power of God expressed personally to those who have been saved 1Cor 1:24;.

God has made Him to be Wisdom for us 1 Cor 1:30; and all the treasures of wisdom are hidden in Him Col 2:3;.

This wisdom is worth having to the maximum of the capacity that God has given to each one by grace Eph 4:7;

The adjective that modifies "sophia" is "pase" which is indefinite so no exact quantity can be determined by the phrase "pase sophia” but each believer has a capacity that can be "maxed out”. Eph 3:19; Eph 1:23;

Paul prays that the Colossian believers have the capacity that is given to each one to be filled to full with wisdom. Every believer has equal privilege and equal opportunity to acquire wisdom Prov 4:7; and there is a mandate in Eph 5:15 to be careful to conduct our lives not as unwise but wise.

This is only possible if we've awakened from the apathy of spiritual sleep and if Christ has shone on us with the light of the knowledge of the glory of God that emanates from His face and that is reflected from the accurate exposition of the Word Eph 5:14; 2Cor 4:6; Psalms 119:130;

In our passage wisdom (sophia) and understanding (sunesis) are connected.

The cognitive assets of wisdom (sophia) and understanding (sunesis) are joined with knowledge (epignosis) and flank love (agape) as it is continually produced by God the Holy Spirit Col 1:8; and borne by the Colossian believers in order for them to re-present TLJC.

Sunesis is the capacity to put the parts of God's commands together and to see them put together as a coherent and unified plan so that it can be executed by the believer through the power of God.

"Sunesis” literally means, "a bringing together" and it refers to the ability to bring ideas together for comprehension or understanding.

For the spiritual life of the believer, sunesis is the insight gained from revelation or enlightenment that come through the PMA of Bible Doctrine under the mentorship of God the Holy Spirit.

Paul's epistles exist for us to learn. When we make every effort to learn them as we are instructed to 2Tim 2:15;, we "can understand Paul's insight (sunesis) into the into the mystery of Christ Eph 3:4;
