In our verse-by-verse study of Romans we are between Romans 1 verse 31 and verse 32 with a study of the doctrine of jealousy.

Our expanded translation of verses 28-31 is:

Rom 1:28; Expanded Translation: "And since with full knowledge (epignosis at gospel hearing), they rejected having the God after careful examination, the God delivered them over to a depraved mind, to do improper evil."

Expanded Translation: Rom 1:29; "Being fully influenced by all categories of anti-justice, by a state of evil, by inordinate desire, by function of evil; full of envy, full of murder, full of dissention (strife or discord), full of treachery, full of evil craftiness; they have become whisperers."

Expanded Translation Rom 1:30: "Backbiters, God-haters, insolent, arrogant, boasters, conjurers of evil, disobedient to parents."

Expanded Translation Rom 1:31; "Ignorant ones, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful." Jealousy is characteristic of the cosmic system so it rejects Bible Doctrine. Acts 13:45; Acts 17:5.

When we left off last time we had noted that when a person is jealous, he becomes contentious because his arrogance causes him to think more of himself than he should.

This requires the person to lie against Gods Word of truth. This means that where jealousy exists, there is every kind of evil activity.

Jealousy motivates religion, Mark 15:10; Jesus Christ was delivered over to death because of the religious jealousy of the leaders of the Jews.

Joseph's brother's jealousy Joseph's position as the first-born motivated them to sell him into slavery, Acts 7:9. When you resent anyone because of their position you are motivated by jealousy and you are arrogant.

Jealousy split the nation Israel, Isa 11:13. The jealous person always attacks the object of their jealousy. In this case Ephraim was jealous of Judah.

In Israel the sin of jealousy was so bad that a special offering was made for it, Num 5:11-31. It is very difficult overcome jealousy.

Jealousy is the basis for the destruction of category two love (personal love of a member of the opposite sex), Song of Solomon 8:6-7. No one with pride or jealousy has capacity for love. Jealousy has great power just as the fear of death has power.

Jealousy is self-destructive, Job 5:2; Prov 14:30. We see here that as goes your mental attitude, so goes your health. Jealousy kills the foolish person.

Jealousy is the strongest mental attitude sin, Prov 27:3-4. Pride is the worst sin, and is the other side of the coin from jealousy. The "rock" in this passage is overt jealousy and anger; the "sand" is subtle jealousy.

Jealousy is the function of arrogance that is a trigger mechanism for the production of false motivation and division.

Phil 1:15a. NET Here we have an example of a right thing, witnessing, done with wrong motivation, jealousy.

Arrogance creates hang-ups of the soul. These hang-ups become the source of false motivation in life that causes people to be petty, jealous, and have inordinate competition. Pettiness and jealousy are facets of arrogance.

This ends our doctrine of jealousy and brings us to verse 32 that addresses the maladjustment principle of heathenism.

Rom 1:32; The first word in the Greek is "who," the nominative masculine plural from the relative pronoun "hostis" This is a reference to reversionists that are described in the previous verses.

"know" This is the aorist active participle from "epignosis" that means a complete and full knowledge, it means definite, exact perception, or to understand something completely. Net note 63

The aorist tense is a culminative aorist, that views the reversionistic unbeliever's perception in its entirety but it emphasizes the existing results of their total cognizance in their condition of heathen reversionism.

In other words, it pulls together their entire perception and emphasizes the entirety of the results. They have a full cognizance of God's justice and in spite of that their negative volition has complete and total rejection of God and the salvation work of Jesus Christ.

They had epignosis gospel that means they understood the consequences of maladjustment to God's justice.

They understood that their sins along with the sins of the entire world were poured out upon Jesus Christ on the cross and God judged those sins, so that He is free to give salvation to anyone who believes in Jesus Christ.

The active voice: the unbeliever heathen reversionist produces the action of the verb resulting in maladjustment to God's justice for salvation.

This is a concessive participle and the word "although" is often used to translate it so it could be translated "such are those who although they have complete cognizance."

"the ruling or ordinance of the God" "dikaioma" means the justice that produces a court ruling, a determination or an ordinance. The accusative neuter singular of the definite article followed by the accusative neuter singular from "dikaioma" followed by "tou Theou" translated "the God referring to Jesus Christ."

The accusative of "dikaioma" means an act of justice based on a righteous standard. It was even used in the Greek for a legal document, a legal act corresponding to an ordinance or a judicial ruling, and therefore it refers to the rendering of justice.

So while it is the God's justice it is the actual rendering of the God's justice and therefore a good way to translate this is, "the legal requirement of the God's justice."

The legal requirement that the God's justice demands for salvation is to believe in Jesus Christ in order to make instant adjustment to the God's justice and be saved.

"that those who practice such things," the conjunction introduces an objective clause after verbs of cognizance. The conjunction here is "hoti".

With it is the accusative neuter plural and the direct object of the participle "toioutos," referring to the activities of reversionistic heathenism listed in verses 29-31, plus a nominative masculine plural from the definite article "ho" that used as a relative pronoun that with the participle forms a relative clause.

Then the present active participle of "prasso" that means to got beyond, to press on through, to execute or to practice. It is generally used for negative actions and that is how it is used in this case.

So we translate this clause, "that those who practice such things." It means to perform evil things that are motivated by reversionism.

This is a retroactive progressive present that views what has started in the past and continues on into the present.

The active voice: the maladjusted unbeliever becomes a reversionistic heathen who practices or does these things.

"are" is the present active indicative of "eimi." The present tense is a static present representing a condition that exists perpetually. In this case what exists is salvation maladjustment to the God's justice.

The active voice: the unbelieving reversionist produces the action of the verb as an expression of heathenism and the influence of evil in his life. The indicative mood is declarative representing the verbal action from the viewpoint of reality.
